This initiative brought together community groups, nonprofits, families, and volunteers across the city with one shared goal: <strong>to remove litter, protect natural ecosystems, and prevent waste from entering Toronto\u2019s parks, ravines, and waterways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our cleanup activity took place from <strong>9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Fred Young Park and its surrounding areas<\/strong>, particularly along the edge of the <strong>Black Creek Forest parkland<\/strong>, one of Toronto\u2019s most ecologically significant green corridors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the Toronto Cleanup Initiative (April 24\u201326, 2026)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Toronto Cleanup<\/strong> is an annual City of Toronto initiative designed to mobilize residents to take hands\u2011on action against litter and environmental degradation. Running from <strong>April 24 to April 26, 2026<\/strong>, the initiative encouraged individuals, schools, nonprofits, and neighbourhood groups to adopt public spaces and actively contribute to environmental protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program focuses on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preventing litter from entering ravines and waterways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supporting urban biodiversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promoting environmental education and stewardship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthening community connections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental Education for a Better Earth Canada joined the initiative as part of our mission to <strong>empower communities with practical environmental action and education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also read: <a href=\"https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/fr\/how-urban-litter-is-shaping-torontos-environment\/\">How Urban Litter Is Shaping Toronto\u2019s Environmental Footprint<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Event Planning and Weather Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An initial site preview was scheduled for <strong>Saturday, April 25, at 9:00 a.m.<\/strong> However, <strong>heavy rainfall across Toronto<\/strong> made the inspection unsafe and impossible to conduct. Despite this weather\u2011related challenge, our team adapted quickly and moved forward with the Toronto cleanup on <strong>Sunday, April 26<\/strong>, demonstrating resilience and commitment to environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the last\u2011minute change in conditions and scheduling constraints, <strong>three dedicated volunteers<\/strong> were able to attend. The majority of litter consisted of <strong>plastic and single\u2011use items<\/strong>, highlighting the ongoing plastic pollution crisis in urban natural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Items collected included:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plastic wrappers and food packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disposable cups and containers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plastic bottles (water, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages such as Heineken)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feeding bottles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aluminum cans<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ceramic plates and dishes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pens, straws, tea cups<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shoes, clothing, car covers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Golf balls, baseballs, and other sports balls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brushes, beauty products, eyeglasses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snack wrappers and plastic fragments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A large concentration of <strong>plastic bottle caps and lightweight plastics<\/strong> was found in the ravine, indicating how easily waste migrates into forest ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\" src=\"https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/final-1024x759.jpeg\" alt=\"Plastic waste collected by Environmental Education for a Better Earth Canada during Toronto community cleanup\" class=\"wp-image-2378\" style=\"width:944px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/final-1024x759.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/final-300x222.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/final-768x569.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/final-1536x1139.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/final-16x12.jpeg 16w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/final.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wildlife Impact: Plastic Is Not Just Litter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most powerful and disturbing observations made during the Toronto cleanup was evidence of <strong>animals mistaking plastic for food<\/strong>. Several balls collected from the forest edge showed <strong>clear bite marks<\/strong>, suggesting wildlife interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This underscores a painful reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Plastic pollution directly threatens wildlife survival.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Animals that ingest plastic can suffer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Internal injuries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Starvation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced mobility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Premature death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our volunteers witnessed firsthand how litter does not stay \u201cout of sight,\u201d  it becomes part of the ecosystem, often with devastating consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cleanup Results and Environmental Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite having a small team, the results were substantial:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>174 pounds of general litter removed<\/strong> (approximately <strong>90% plastic<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>25 pounds of recyclable materials collected<\/strong>, including cans, bottles, and ceramics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>199 pounds of total waste removed from the environment<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This represents <strong>199 pounds of waste prevented from entering Black Creek Forest<\/strong>, protecting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Biodiversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wildlife health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soil and water quality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plant ecosystems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Every pound removed means <strong>less stress on animals, plants, and fragile forest systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"756\" src=\"https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SUCCESS-1024x756.jpeg\" alt=\"Toronto Cleanup volunteers after successful environmental action\" class=\"wp-image-2379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SUCCESS-1024x756.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SUCCESS-300x221.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SUCCESS-768x567.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SUCCESS-1536x1134.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SUCCESS-16x12.jpeg 16w, https:\/\/eefabecanada.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/SUCCESS.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Work Must Continue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While this Toronto cleanup made a meaningful difference, <strong>much more remains to be done<\/strong>. Plastic pollution continues to threaten Black Creek Forest due to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Nearby residential areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High foot traffic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Proximity to York University<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inadequate waste disposal behaviors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are still plastics in the surrounding areas beyond our Toronto cleanup zone.
