Urban Forest Restoration: 1-Tonne Plastic Removal Project
The 1‑Tonne Plastic Removal Project is EEFABE Canada’s flagship environmental restoration initiative. It aims to remove one tonne of plastic pollution from Toronto’s urban forests, ravines, parks, and green spaces by the end of 2026, while raising awareness about the hidden impacts of plastic waste on local ecosystems. The project targets both visible litter and concealed waste within forest interiors. Our ongoing efforts continue to advance progress toward this goal through on‑site waste sorting, accurate data tracking, and strong field leadership, despite challenging terrain and operational constraints.
Objectives

Remove Plastic Pollution
Identify, collect, and properly dispose of plastic waste in environmentally sensitive areas. Improve conditions for native plants and wildlife.

Protect Wildlife
Reduce risks related to ingestion, entanglement, and habitat degradation caused by plastic debris. Support healthy habitats for birds, pollinators, and small mammals.

Prevent Microplastic Contamination
Remove plastics before they break down into smaller particles that contaminate soil and waterways.

Restore Natural Spaces
Improve the ecological health of forests, parks, and ravines. Strengthen green spaces that help reduce flooding and urban heat.

Build Community Stewardship
Engage volunteers and residents in hands-on environmental action. Promote public involvement in restoration activities.

Generate Environmental Data
Track and report measurable environmental outcomes. Track environmental improvements over time.
Progress and Achievements
- Successfully removed 954 pounds of litter — including 601 pounds of plastics — across Black Creek Parkland, Driftwood Park, Fred Young Park, Dan Lannuzzi Park, and the Dan Lannuzzi Pond, representing 27% of our 1‑tonne removal target for this year
- Restored 65,120 m² of urban forest and ravine habitat from plastic pollution, an area equivalent to more than nine professional soccer fields.
- Engaged 5 volunteers, contributing approximately 45 volunteer hours.
